Evaluators

Every FORTIFIED job needs an independent evaluator, paid by the homeowner. Contractors can't evaluate their own grant jobs.

No evaluators confirmed for Ponchatoula yet. Until they're listed, use the state's approved evaluator list.

How the grant works

The Louisiana Fortify Homes Program runs as a lottery. Here is the order of steps once you register.

  1. Create a profile and register for the lotteryAt ldi.la.gov/fortifyhomes, during an open registration window. It has to be your primary home with a homestead exemption and wind coverage.
  2. Get selectedThe state notifies winners. Registering early in the window doesn't improve your odds.
  3. Hire an approved evaluatorThey inspect the home, confirm it qualifies, and list the work needed. You pay their fee.
  4. Collect three bids from approved contractorsSubmit them to the program for review. This is where the listings above help.
  5. Finish the work within 90 days of approvalMost projects are a full roof replacement. Partial repairs don't qualify.
  6. Evaluator certifies, state pays the contractorIBHS issues the FORTIFIED certificate. Up to $10,000 goes straight to the contractor, and you cover the rest.
  7. Send the certificate to your insurerThat's what triggers your premium discount. The certificate transfers if you sell.
Don't sign or start work before the program approves you. Starting early makes you ineligible for the grant. Not selected? You can still pay for a FORTIFIED roof yourself and get the insurance discount.
